OCTM 2020 Conference

To the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of Mathematics Community,

The mission of OCTM is to advocate for high-quality mathematics teaching and learning for every student in Oklahoma by supporting educators in their efforts to improve the learning of mathematics. OCTM is dedicated to promoting effective teaching of mathematics by providing teachers with resources, publishing newsletters and a journal, providing professional development opportunities through our annual conference, and connecting members to each other and to information beyond our state.

Now, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, our mathematics community must do its part to slow the spread of the virus, which will save lives and avoid overwhelming our local healthcare infrastructure. The safety of educators, school employees, students, and our communities is our top priority. Therefore, based on guidance from national health officials and the example of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, the OCTM Board of Directors has voted to postpone our Annual Conference until the fall of 2020.  Please, be watching your email for a poll concerning potential dates for the fall conference.

We would like to take this time to encourage our members to please follow any restrictions outlined by our state and local health departments or other state and local authorities.

We appreciate the understanding of those who were looking forward to attending the Annual Conference, as well as the many presenters, exhibitors, and vendors. This is disappointing for all of us, particularly the Conference Committee which has worked diligently over the last year in preparation for this conference.

Since our conference is the venue in which elections and our annual meeting are conducted, be looking for electronic communications concerning these proceedings. If you have already registered for the conference you will be hearing from Porctia Tinsley, our treasurer, concerning your refund.

In the meantime, please know your board of directors is actively working with the Oklahoma State Department of Education to develop resources and training to support mathematics learning in this unchartered territory in which we find ourselves. If you would like to be a part of the mentoring or professional development committees to develop resources, please contact Cindy Johnson: [email protected], Telannia Norfar: [email protected], Christine Koerner: [email protected] or me, Melynee Naegele: [email protected] Be watching www.okctm.org for the resources that come out of these efforts. Once again, thank you for your understanding in these challenging circumstances. As always, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please contact me via email or phone!
